A paranormal investigation begins long before the lights go out. From venue research and equipment preparation to safety briefings and contamination control, the work starts before investigators ask their first question.

The building is quiet. Equipment cases are open. Cameras are being positioned. Recorders are checked, batteries are replaced and unfamiliar sounds are already being noted.

Guests may not have arrived yet—but the investigation has begun.

Public paranormal events are often remembered for what happens after dark: an unexplained sound, an unusual equipment activation or a moment that leaves everyone questioning what they experienced. Behind those moments is a less dramatic—but far more important—process: preparation.

At Hide and Seek Paraquest, an investigation should never begin with the assumption that a location is haunted. It begins by understanding the building, controlling what can be controlled and creating an environment in which unusual activity can be assessed responsibly.

Research without creating expectations

Historical research can provide important context. Who occupied the building? How was it used? Has its layout changed? Were sections added, removed or repurposed? Are the stories associated with the location supported by records—or have they grown through repetition?

There is also a delicate balance. If investigators are given every story before entering a room, expectation can influence what they notice and how they interpret an ordinary sound or sensation.

One investigative option is to separate roles. A researcher or event leader may hold the location history while other investigators enter selected areas without being told what has reportedly happened there. Their observations can then be recorded before the historical information is revealed.

This does not prove that an experience is paranormal. It simply reduces one possible source of influence.

Walking through the location

Before equipment is activated, the team needs to understand the environment. A daylight or lights-on walkthrough can identify uneven floors, restricted areas, fire exits, nearby roads, loose doors and windows, plumbing and ventilation sounds, wildlife and rooms requiring additional supervision.

This is not merely a safety exercise. It provides a reference point for the investigation.

A door that moves because of airflow is less mysterious when the airflow has already been identified. Pipes that knock at regular intervals can be documented. Headlights passing a particular window can explain moving shadows.

Understanding the ordinary behaviour of a building gives investigators a better chance of recognising something genuinely unusual.

Preparing the equipment

Paranormal equipment does not replace observation. It creates additional information that must still be interpreted carefully.

Before an investigation, devices should be checked for damage, supplied with fresh or charged batteries and tested to confirm that they are functioning normally. Trigger objects should be positioned on stable surfaces. Baseline readings can be recorded where appropriate, and equipment locations documented so that movement is not mistaken for an unexplained change.

The team should also understand what each device actually measures.

An EMF meter detects changes in electromagnetic fields. It does not identify the cause of those changes. A motion-activated cat ball responds to movement or vibration. It cannot determine what moved it. A recorder captures sound—including voices, clothing, footsteps, traffic and noises investigators may not consciously notice at the time.

Equipment can alert the team to an event. It cannot provide the conclusion.

Establishing environmental baselines

Before asking questions, investigators should spend time listening. What does the building sound like when nobody is deliberately interacting? Do floorboards move as people shift their weight? Can voices travel between rooms? Does traffic create vibration? Are there repeating mechanical sounds?

Temperature, electromagnetic readings and other environmental conditions may also be documented where relevant.

A baseline is not a declaration that the environment will remain unchanged. Buildings respond to temperature, weather, human movement and machinery. It is simply a starting point. Without one, an investigator may notice a reading later but have no meaningful comparison.

The team briefing

Every investigation needs clear responsibilities. Before participants enter the location, the team should know who is leading each group, which areas are accessible, where equipment has been positioned, how known sounds will be identified, what to do if somebody feels unwell or distressed, who handles venue concerns and how possible evidence will be documented.

A good briefing creates consistency. It also protects the venue, the participants and the integrity of anything recorded. Paranormal investigation can be exciting, but excitement should never override safety, respect or critical thinking.

Welcoming guests into a real investigation

Many guests arrive with different expectations. Some are convinced paranormal activity exists. Some are deeply sceptical. Others are simply curious and want to experience the process for themselves.

They should not be told what they are expected to feel. Instead, participants can be shown how equipment works, what may cause false activations and why known sounds need to be identified aloud.

A guest who accidentally touches a trigger object has not ruined the evening—provided the contact is acknowledged and documented. A person whispering in another room can easily become an apparent EVP if nobody records who spoke.

Contamination is not embarrassing. Concealing or forgetting it is the problem.

When something unusual happens

An unexpected sound or activation can change the atmosphere instantly. The natural reaction is excitement. The investigative reaction should be curiosity.

Before declaring an event unexplained, investigators can ask: did anyone move or speak? Did somebody enter or leave the area? Was the sound heard live? Did another recorder or camera capture it? Could traffic, plumbing, wildlife or the building explain it? Can the event be recreated? Was equipment touched, moved or affected by vibration?

Sometimes the explanation appears immediately. Sometimes it emerges during evidence review. Sometimes no reliable explanation is found.

“Unexplained” is a valid outcome. It means the available information has not identified a cause—not that a paranormal cause has been proven.

The work continues after everyone leaves

Packing the equipment does not end the investigation. Recordings must be transferred and protected. Video and audio may require hours of review, and potential evidence should be examined in context.

A short audio clip can sound extraordinary until corresponding video shows somebody moving nearby. A light anomaly may look mysterious until another camera reveals a reflective surface or passing vehicle.

Responsible review is not about finding as many “ghosts” as possible. It is about removing what can reasonably be explained.

Anything shared publicly should retain enough context for viewers to form their own opinion. If audio has been amplified, filtered or edited for presentation, that should be disclosed. Where possible, original files should remain protected.

Why preparation matters

The most compelling part of an investigation may last only seconds. The work that gives that moment value can take hours.

Research, safety checks, environmental observations, equipment preparation, documentation and review may not always appear in dramatic paranormal videos—but they are what separate investigation from performance.

HSPQ does not need every sound to be a spirit or every activation to be evidence. We need to ask better questions: what happened? What else could have caused it? What information do we have? What information are we missing? And after reasonable explanations have been considered—what remains?
